Asian conical hat , commonly known as Asian rice hat , hat porter (in England), or farmer hat b>, is conical styles of conical hats originating from East, South and Southeast Asia, especially Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, parts of Manchuria Russia and Vietnam.

It is kept in the head by a cloth chin strap (often silk).

Practical use

This hat style is used primarily as protection from the sun and rain. When made of straw or wicker, it can be immersed in water and used as a means of cooling-evaporative abruptly.

In the Philippines, this type of plain is usually used by farmers, but the nobility creates variations of ornaments with gems or made of turtle shells and spikes on it. It was worn by native soldiers, especially Tagalog, Kapampangan, and Ilocanos from the Spanish Colonial Army during the later years of the Spanish colonial period.

Similarly in India and Kalimantan, cone caps are plainly worn by ordinary people during their daily work, but more colorful decorators are used for celebrations. In Sabah colorful conical hats are worn for certain dances while in Assam they are hung at home as decoration or worn by upper classes for special occasions.

In China, it is typically associated with farmers, while mandarin wear a tighter circular cap, especially in winter.

Regional name

English terms for this hat include gedang hats, rice hats, rice hats, bamboo hats, and sometimes coolie caps.

In Chinese, this is called d? UlÃÆ'¬ ( ?? ), literally meaning "one-d? U bamboo hat", ( ?? , ?? ). This is known as sugegasa ( ?? ) in Japanese, do'un (? ??) in Cambodia, will in Malaysia, caping in Indonesia, and salakot in the Philippines. In Korea, the cap is called satgat ( ?? ) or gaerip ( ?? , ?? ). In Burmese, the hat is called khamauk ( ?????? ).

In Vietnam, its name is nÃÆ'³n lÃÆ'¡ (leaf hat). Among the conical hats, the Vietnamese nÃÆ'³n lÃÆ'¡ form a perfect right circular cone that shrinks smoothly from base to top. Special conical hat in Vietnam contains paintings or colorful hand-drawn words while Hu? famous varieties because they are nÃÆ'³n bÃÆ' i th? (literally: a conical hat poem). It contains random poetic poetry and HÃÆ'¡n t? which can be revealed when a hat is directed over one's head in the sun. Today, it has become part of Vietnam's national costume.
