Spirit Day is the annual LGBTQ awareness day observed on the third Thursday in October. Beginning in 2010 by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan, was originally created in response to a rash of gay suicide cases that received widespread publicity publicity in 2010, including Tyler Clementi. Promoted by GLAAD, observers wear purple as a sign of support for LGBTQ youth and against bullying during the National Bullying Prevention Month, as well as to honor LGBTQ suicide victims.

McCance submitted his resignation letter to the Midlands School District effective November 1, 2010.

In 2016, a few years after Spirit Day became an official LGBT holiday, McMillan reflected saying, "These are the participants who make the Spirit Day as it is, they create their own show and their own art, all on behalf of LGBTQ show young people that they care... I know how much it means for people around the world to know that they are supported by their community. "In addition, VP Programming GLAAD, Zeke Stokes, shares the appreciation by saying that words and pictures that come from holidays Spirit Day, describes love and affection for the LGBTQ community, which leads to youths living their authentic lives. McMillan states that he's trying to find ways to keep Spirit Day going since the internet and social media are constantly changing.
