Simon Carter Ltd. Is a British fashion design company specialising in men's accessories and menswear, founded in London in 1985 by its eponymous director.
Whilst training as an immunologist in the early 1980s Simon Carter became inspired by the vibrant culture of London's King's Road. He had a vintage brooch copied in pewter and, after some time going from premises to premises in the King's Road sold this to the society jeweller's Cobra and Bellamy. Following this a range of cufflinks was produced and sold widely. The early cufflink designs moved from cast pewter Edwardian derived ideas to vitreous enamel, modernist inspired forms utilising bright, contrasted colours and geometric shapes. The retro theme was retained on a small scale, re-imagined in a range of premium platinum guilloché designs featuring fleur-de-lys and crown motifs. In 1995 Simon Carter invented the Aspirin cufflink. This is a lathe turned solid brass, rhodium plated toggle design which features a threaded cap, engraved to resemble the pill with its lateral groove and branding, which can be unscrewed to reveal a compartment sized to accommodate a pill. The Aspirin cufflink innovation led to Simon Carter being dubbed "The King of Cufflinks" by the press. 'Aspirin' is Simon Carter's best selling cufflink to date.
Now the brand offering includes original design cufflinks, men's jewellery, wallets and other small leathers, wrist watches, luggage, scarves, gloves and belts , various 'essentials' such as tie clips, underwear and socks, pocket squares and dress studs as well as a full clothing offer comprising shirts, suits, jackets, trousers and formal wear.
Simon Carter views the move into an expanded product offering as a natural extension of the brand's emphasis on quality of materials and design, and as a way to reflect its diverse inspirations which include: the decorative arts, particularly Art Deco, fine art, engineering, the natural and man-made environments, pop culture and the history of design itself. Examples include the luggage and small leathers collections which explore the use of artisan assembled fine materials contrasted with distinctive linings and other details. Scarves are hand made from Merino wool using traditional techniques, dyes and patterns. Jackets fabrics are sourced from long established British and European mills that specialise in high quality weaves. The shirts category is viewed as the broadest space to work with the various influences. Liberty of London with its historical connection to the work of William Morris features in it, including archive Liberty designs of various periods which are made available to Simon Carter exclusively. The shirts range also includes Simon Carter in-house derived patterns and textures on seasonal themes.
