History
Founded in 2000 as Coastal Contact by Roger Hardy and his sister Michaela Hardy, who purchased the "contact lens" keyword from AltaVista, meaning that all searches for "contact lenses" were accompanied by Coastal Contacts banner ads. On the first day, they got 30 orders; in the first month, they have $ 68,000 in sales. In addition to lower prices, the company provides online order fulfillment on the same day.
In 2004, Coastal Contacts collected $ 6 million in an initial public offering, which they used to expand into the UK and parts of Europe. At the end of 2004, they acquired mail order contact lenses business in Europe, LensWay. In 2006, they acquired two more companies: one in the Netherlands and one in Japan. In 2009, the company increased their revenues to $ 140 million. They moved into the eyewear market in 2008. They source parts for eyeglasses from independent manufacturing around the world, but retain control over the final assembly.
In January 2012, they sent over 80,000 prescription eyeglasses, setting service records for online sales of prescription-made eyeglasses in a month. In 2012, the company has sold more than $ 1.2 billion in retail eyewear sales over the Internet since its inception and served more than 5 million subscribers.
In 2014, French lens manufacturer Essilor acquired Coastal.com and appointed Roy Hessel as CEO. Hessel, a former venture capitalist, founded EyeBuyDirect online eyewear retailer in 2005. In addition to his role with Clearly, Roy Hessel has also since 2016 VP of America for the Essilor Online division. In August 2017, he appointed a new Managing Director at Clearly to assist him in designing and implementing the company's strategy.
By 2015, Contact Clearly re-brand itself as Clear, while also making brand name changes in other global markets. In the United States, they are known as Coastal, Kontakan in Japan, and LensWay in Scandinavia.
