The cheerleading uniform is the standard outfit worn by cheerleaders while playing and other events. These uniforms usually include official colors and school or team mascots and are designed to make the wearer look physically attractive.

Cheerleading uniforms in the early 1900s are a strong symbol of the schools they represent, usually illustrating the first letter of the middle school or first letter plus the letters "H" and "S", short for "high school". These letters are usually sewn into sweater-type clothes, sometimes even polo shirts in warm weather. While demonstrating the spirit of the school and having a cheerleader uniformed team, these sweaters are often hot, big, and not too functional for all types of athletic movements. The most common type of sweater worn by cheerleading in the early 1900s was a long cardigan with some buttons, usually worn over a turtle neck shirt or blouse blouse. School letters are often sewn in one corner of the sweater, sometimes in the middle of the form of a megaphone. Wearing a sweater is a woolen skirt with a very simple foot length, often darker than a sweater. Some of the early cheerleading teams picked a plaid cloth for the skirt, often these squads came from religious schools and universities, as the boxes were the main fabric of their class uniforms.
The early cheerleaders wear saddle shoes or flat canvas shoes with high socks in their uniforms. This uniform style continued into the 1950s and 1960s and is often depicted in films and photographs from that period of time. One of the first companies to produce cheerleading uniforms was the Cheerleader Supply Company, founded in 1948. The company was founded by Lawrence Herkie Herkimer of Dallas, TX and a former cheerleader at Southern Methodist University, who began selling pom pits to local kits Senior High School. Herkie was also the first to host tents and cheerleading competitions.

1960 uniform
When fashion styles changed during the 1960s as well as cheerleading uniforms. Missing is a wool skirt that is too long, because the shorter skirt becomes more popular. The long skirt is essentially cut in half as a knee length cotton skirt made for easier movement and a more comfortable experience for the wearer compared to their wool counterparts. The top of the sweater changed dramatically, the team selected to wear a short-sleeved neck sweater for a long cardigan, but the school letter and megaphone emblem remained, now placed in the center of a stylish crew sweater sweater. Some teams in this period of time, especially high school squads, prefer to place additional embroidery emblems with team members' names in the middle of school letter patches. Uniform of the 1970s
Much has changed in uniform fashion from the 1960s. Most teams now wear more athletic shoes or tennis shoes. Young climbers wore sneakers compared to saddlery or Keds, and their uniforms were not too large to allow for easier movement. Also more variety available for sweaters, vests or shells and skirts. The sweater now features a line pattern on the front, in alternating school colors. Patches of letters become more complicated, too, often more colorful and unique. Sweaters are also less large and have a better size. This new sleek style allows for better movement and more of a functional fit, without sacrificing modesty or tradition. Warm clothing is made to fit the body to be tight, and the length is very short tapered to remove overlapping fabric with a skirt. Often this causes the bare cheerleading stomach to be exposed during movement-now most sweaters are worn without a collared shirt or blouse underneath. Different styles are combined to give the team more choices. The round neck, and the popular v-neck sweaters with squads looking for greater functionality, such as cheerleaders become more athletic than standard vocal singing. The new sweater style allows the team to remove the extra collared blouse under the sweater, basically just wearing a sweater over the bra. While this uniform provides a functional style, some simple women in the community view this dress as embarrassing and blatant. Short skirts combined with shorter and tighter sweaters are viewed by some as "inappropriate."
1985-1995 uniform
This thesis uniform is similar to the current uniform except the humped socks especially Wigwam wool socks are very popular to wear. Also the Keds championship shoes worn by many cheerleaders. The typical school cheerleading uniform from 1985 does not look very different from today's uniforms. The favorite top in this period is a sleeveless waistcoat at the waist, worn with or without a turtleneck layer underneath. The top of the vest is a simple style, and most of it is not disclosed. Also seen as the top of the uniform is the turtleneck worn under the shirt. The optional skirt remains a fold model, but with additional color lines around the lower end. The preferred long style is shortened to mid-thigh or slightly longer for most teams. The current general rule is that the skirt should be at the fingertips when the arms are on the sides. Bicycle shorts are worn underneath with some uniforms.
Uniform now
Most uniforms are currently made of polyester blended fabrics, usually containing spandex as well. The top of the sleeveless is called the shell, if they have the arm it is called a liner. Most American school teams wear sleeveless tops with sports bras or athletic tank tops underneath. If the shell has no arms, many teams wear the turtle's turtle bodysuit underneath, although this is not specifically required. Bodysuits can be tricot like or just cover the bottom of the rib cage. Due to guidelines imposed by the National College Federation, high school teams should have a top covering their stomachs with arms at their sides, but if the most uniform raised sleeves will show a small part of the stomach, which is not against the NFSHSA rules. Most school-approved teams have simple-looking uniforms that usually fit the waist, covering the entire frontal upper body except on the shoulders and arms when worn without sleeves. Similarly, the rear constructions of most school cheerleader peaks cover the entire upper body, but the skin in the lower back area is largely left uncovered if the guard sits or bends down; this does not violate the NFSHSA uniform rules. This requirement does not apply to all star cheerleading organizations, therefore many have peaks that stop at or just below the bottom of the bra line. Another growing trend amongst the team of stars is to have missing material parts (allowing bare skin to be displayed) at the top for the chest, shoulders, upper back, or part of the arm. The length of the skirt has been dramatically shortened, with average lengths for skirts in both high school and all-stars being 10 to 13 inches, and the length is shrinking every year, but some coaches and team sponsors encourage wearing shorter skirts for safety reasons (too much material can be dangerous when falling). Skirts worn over colored or metallic spandex/polyester pants, also called lollies, spankies, or bundies. These pants are worn over panties and sometimes printed with stars, dots, etc. Pants can sometimes also have team logos, such as foot prints, stitched on the side or back.
