cruise collection or resort collection , sometimes also referred to as holiday or travel collection ( croisi̮' ̬ collection re in French), is a season or pre-season line of ready-made clothing produced by fashion houses or fashion brands in addition to the twice-yearly seasonal collection - spring/summer and fall (or autumn)/winter - heralded at a fashion show in New York, London, Paris, and Milan.
Originally intended for wealthy customers or "more experienced jet-setters" who make the voyage (eg North America) or vacation in warm Mediterranean areas (eg Europe) during the winter, the cruise collection offers spring or summer clothing when the weather is in place actual sales calls for winter clothing. These days, they are targeted at customers who have "finished buying the fall cabinets and are looking forward to the holidays". This "warm weather design [...] arrives in stores in the US in November", after collection of autumn/winter and before spring/summer collection, or generally between November/December and February in the Northern Hemisphere.
High fashion houses like Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, and Ralph Lauren offer a cruise/resort collection. Although usually intended for women, lately "menswear will come with Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Prada, Zegna, Etro, Gucci, and Burberry often sneak into some sights to see autumn fashion show" or produce collections typical yacht. Yves Saint-Laurent presented the first male cruise collection in 2006 that has since been offered every year.
