The Grammy Award for Best Music Video is an award given at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony established in 1958 and originally called the Gramophone Awards, for players, directors, and producers of short quality music videos. Honors in several categories are presented at ceremonies annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and the Sciences of the United States to "honor artistic achievement, technical ability and overall excellence in the recording industry, regardless of album sales or chart position".
Originally called the Grammy Award for Best Videos, Short Form, this award was first presented in 1984, like a similar award for Best Long Form Music Video. From 1986 to 1997, the category name was changed to Best Music Video, Short Form . However, in 1988 and 1989, the award criteria were changed and video awards were presented under the category Best Concept Music Video and Best Performance Music Video. The award was restored to its original format in 1990. The category was named Best Short Form Music Video until 2012, from 2013 shortened to Best Music Video. Award recipients include players, directors and producers associated with winning videos.
Johnny Cash, Peter Gabriel, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson hold the record of most victories as players in this category, with two each (Michael is also a member of the US supergroup for Africa and heavily involved in "We Are a" World "project. the record for most wins as director, for a total of 3. Iceland singer BjÃÆ'¶rk holds the record for most nominations as a winless player, with four.
