History
Founded in 1571 by Gat Tayaw, the small town of Liliw is located at the foot of Mount Banahaw, 17 kilometers (11 miles) from Santa Cruz, the capital of Laguna.
According to a story, Liliw gets his name from a bird. It is said that Gat Tayaw and his followers decided to set up a bamboo pole and named the city after the first bird was going down at the top of the pole within four days. A crow, however, was the first bird to descend on the pole. A crow is considered to be bad so that Gat Tayaw and his men move south and build another bamboo stick. A beautiful bird sits on a pole and sings, "Liw, Liw, Liw". Thus the city became Liliw.
Throughout the Spanish regime, the name Liliw was used. When Americans come, it becomes Lilio because Americans find it easier to say it than Liliw. However, on June 11, 1965, the city council issued Resolution No. 38-S-65 which states Liliw as the official name and spelling of the city. This is to avoid confusion in pronouncing and spelling the name of the city.
