Sleepwear - also called nightwear , evening cloth , or nightgown - are clothes designed to wear when sleep. Sleepwear styles that are worn can vary according to season, with a warmer style that is worn in cold conditions and vice versa. Some styles or materials are chosen to appeal visually or erotic in addition to their functional purpose.

Sleepwear includes:

Children's Sleepwear

On December 22, 2011, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a letter to producers, distributors, importers and retailers who reminded the underwear industry about their law enforcement policies and obligations associated with sleepwear and childrens sleepwear.

The Commission Regulation defines the terms of the children's sleepwear to include any apparel product (in sizes 0-14), such as a nightgown, pajamas, or similar or related articles, such as robes, intended to be used primarily for sleeping or activities related to sleep, except: (1) diapers and underwear; (2) baby clothes , sized for children aged nine months or younger; and (3) tight clothing that meets certain maximum dimensions.

All childrens sleepwear and loungewear sold in the US are required to comply with the Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA) using the standards for Flammability of Children's Sleepwear 16 C.F.R. Sections 1615 and 1616. In addition, they must comply with the requirements for Consumer Product Safety Improvement in 2008 (CPSIA) including tracking labels, compliance certificates, meeting requirements for lead content and surface coating, and meeting requirements for phthalates.
