A short swim or short racing is a short men's swimwear as it is worn in competitive pools and dives. The popularity of the Australian brand race racing Speedo has led to the use of its name in many countries around the world (eg United States, New Zealand, Britain and Europe) to refer to short race reports, regardless of the manufacturer. Sometimes, the generic trademark Speedo also applies to square cut swimsuits, but in general generic terms are used in reference to swimwear. The swimming briefs are also referred to as competition briefs, swimsuits, baths, racer bathers, posing briefs, brief racing, and everyday language in Australia as "budgie smugglers".
Like a pair of underwear, swimming trunks have a V-shaped front and a sturdy back cover provides the right cover. They are usually worn under the lower waist. They are generally secured with a thin ribbon on the upper thigh and either a strap around the waist or elastic waist. Swimming pants are most often made of nylon and spandex (Lycra) composites, while some durable clothing is made of polyester and others of other materials. Most swimsuits have a cream or white front layer made of the same fabric.

Use and popularity
Swimsuits worn by professional athletes and recreation in many water sports. They are the standard for competitive dive and water polo. They prefer to swim competitively to reduce water resistance to swimmers, although jammers and bodyskins are sometimes used instead of swimming. Participants in sports that require wetsuits such as water skiing, scuba diving, surfing, and wakeboarding often wear swimsuits as wetsuit underwear.
While swimsuits are used worldwide by athletes for water sports, the popularity of swimwear as casual swimwear and swimsuits varies around the world. In mainland Europe and Brazil, pants are relatively common among male swimmers and beach goers. In the United States and Britain, wider pants and less revealing or board shorts are the preferred outfit for recreation, although swimsuits always look to some extent. In some swimming pools in France, men are only allowed to wear swimsuits and not shorts, for reasons related to cleanliness. The swimming pants are chosen for recreation including style, ease of moving in water, sun exposure, fast drying time, and ability to wear under trousers or shorts. Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott is a fitness fanatic known for wearing "speedos" or "budgie smugglers".
Swimwear are sometimes worn under shorts for courtesy purposes, and are often used as athletic supporters under shorts during sports activities.

Styles
Pants worn for competitive swimming and recreation are produced in standard sizes and in waist size. They are available in a variety of solid colors and patterned designs.
Racing shirt
The most common racing styles are 1.5 inches to 3 inches of paneled pants (as measured by the height and length of the coat side panels). The main function of this racing is to reduce the drag of athletes in the water, thereby increasing the time. For this reason racing clothes are made of materials that hug the body, minimizing friction and minimizing water retention. Spandex (Lycra) matches generally produce fewer barriers, but are also more prone to exposure to chlorine longer than nylon. Therefore, the nylon suit is preferred for training and practice, where increased endurance is required for long-term use and extra durability brings training benefits. Lycra Apparel (and hi-tech swimwear composite fabric) is preferred for real racing. In water polo and sometimes in diving, clothes can have panels over 3 inches.
Water polo players generally wear racing clothes. This is to minimize the fabric available to grab and pull your opponent - an illegal but often underwater action - while not compromising the strength of the fabric. High-level players wear special clothing, usually very tight and made of thicker, harder and more slippery fabrics, intended to thwart draws and grabs while playing rough; they often wear two suits on top of each other.
Triathlon swimming pants
The range of special pants and shorts made for the triathlon features a racing suit design for the swimsuit section of the race, but also features light pads on the crotch for the bicycle parts of the race. This is a lighter version of chamois leather in cycling shorts, to allow for more efficient running and shorts to dry faster after swimming.
Manufacturer
In addition to Speedo style company names, competitive stylish underwear pants are produced by companies including Nike, Tyr, Dolfin, Arena, Kiefer, Adidas and aussieBum. Many of these companies have expanded their merchandise to reflect the latest trends in water sports. These include the growing popularity of jammer styles and the development of a complete body suit for competitive swimming.
At the end of the fashion, several design companies including Nautica, Olaf Benz, Calvin Klein and aussieBum have started a brief clothing line in the United States. Most of the men's swimwear brands in Europe, Asia, and Australia produce shorter-style outline styles, including the increasingly popular Brazil rectangular piece (known as flower in Portuguese).
