The Union Jack dress is a clothing item worn by singer Geri Halliwell of Spice Girls at the 1997 BRIT Awards. The mini dress featured the United Kingdom flag, Union Jack, on the front, and a white peace symbol emblazoned on the back of a black dress. The next day the picture of the dress made front pages of newspapers around the world, and is now remembered as one of the most iconic pop moments of the 1990s and the history of the Brit Awards. The dress has become synonymous with Spice Girls, Halliwell and the notion of Girls Strength and Cool Britannia.

According to The Daily Telegraph , the dress is at the top of the online poll to find the 10 most iconic dresses in the last 50 years, beating out other unforgettable outfits like the white halterneck 'Seven Year Itch' Marilyn Monroe dress Princess Diana's bride. In 2016, the dress was voted "The Most Inspiring Momentum of Fashion" in an online poll conducted by UK online retailer, Very.

In 2010, the performance in the Union Jack dress won the Most Memorable Performance of 30 Years at the Brit Awards. The dress holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive piece of popstar clothing that was auctioned off when it sold for Ã, £ 41,320 in 1998.

Creation

At the BRIT Awards in 1997, the Spice Girls were scheduled to perform, and were nominated for five awards, two of which they won. The black Gucci mini dress that Halliwell was given to appear concerned about her, because she thought it was too "boring". Then Halliwell decided he wanted to "celebrate being an Englishman," so he asked his sister to sew a Union Jack tea towel forward as a patriotic stance. After Karen, her sister, sewed the tea towel, Geri decided to wear it while doing "Who Do You Think You Are" (with a quote "Wannabe" in) at the BRIT Awards on February 24, 1997.

In 1998, a year after Halliwell appeared in the dress, he auctioned it at London Sotheby's branch for £ 41,320. The buyer was Peter Morton, on behalf of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, who displayed the pieces as pop memorabilia. Offer Morton by phone, and beat other bidders like The Sun . Halliwell himself witnessed a "frenzied offer", and knocked the hammer after the last offer. The dress was originally worth  £ 12,000, but ultimately it's worth  £ 36,200 (which, with a 15% commission, amounts to  £ 41,320). Halliwell gave the sale of the dress to a child cancer care charity. The BBC commented on the sale, saying it "marks the end of Geri's relationship with the image of Women's Strength in the past". It holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive piece of popstar clothing that is handled at auction. The dress is one of the many items of Spice Girls memorabilia that are sold at auction, where total sales reach £ 146,511 for charity. The 1998 auction, with Halliwell auctioning off Union Jack dresses as the last lot, can be seen in the documentary film Geri by documentary filmmaker Molly Dineen.

remake 2007

For the 2007 Spice Girls reunion tour, called Return of the Spice Girls, fashion designer Roberto Cavalli designed Halliwell, a new Union Jack dress with the original model. The new version appears a little longer and the flag is made of rhinestones and Swarovski crystals. It was reported by various media that Halliwell had tried to buy back original clothes before the start of their world tour.

Halliwell stated that ahead of the O2 Arena the date that "we are an English band and very proud to fly the flags." Walking out in a Union Jack dress will be special. " Halliwell stated in later interviews that he "liked" the new dress and that he had decided to keep it as a memorabilia.
