Theater and Dance School is a department within Art Academy Kathrine G. McGovern at the University of Houston. The School offers both Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs, including Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting, stage management, theater engineering, theater education and joint titles in both playwrights and dramaturgi; all at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate courses are offered at: acting, theater studies, theater design, technical direction, and theater education. The current Director of Theater and Dance School is Rob Shimko, a position he has held since 2016.

Histori
Theater School & amp; Dance (SOTD) is a University of Houston drama school. SOTD produces professional dramas, dance concerts, studio productions, new festivals, and school events through the Youth Theater program. The school performed at Wortham Theater and the Quintero Theater. Houston Shakespeare Festival is a professional school project, produced every summer at the Miller Outdoor Theater. The UH School of Theater & amp; Dance offers bachelor and master's degrees in theater and teacher certification in dance. The graduate program consists of art in theater and master of fine arts in the theater with specialization in acting, directing and design. The faculty includes Pulitzer Prize-winning drama writer Edward Albee, Tony's award-winning playwright Mark Medoff, producer Tony Stuart Ostrow, and nominated Tony Award designer Kevin Rigdon. Among the greats who had taught at school in previous years were Lanford Wilson, Sir Peter Hall and Jose Quintero.

Theater program
The mission of the UH Theater Program is to educate and prepare students for successful and meaningful careers in theaters and related professions. Featuring the largest theater department in the city of Houston, this school has 120 full-time graduates and students. It is a high-energy program with dedicated and hardworking students. Their goal is to instill the skills and work ethic needed to compete and succeed in the performing arts.
Emphasis
- Learning - To understand the basics of theater practice, theories, and techniques. Classroom work gives students context to discuss theater and improve their chosen specialization.
- Applications - To create a theater built on classroom work.
- Mentorship - To connect students with working professionals and build networks. Faculty and staff at UH know each student and provide guidance to prepare them for the job market.
Dance Program
The Theater and Dance School provides the only degree program to dance in Houston.
Facilities
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Arts Center includes the Wortham Theater, the 566-seat proscenium stage, and the Quintero Theater, a 190-seat black box theater. A $ 4 million renovation by architectural firm based in Austin, Lake l Flato, was completed in 2005. The construction project enhances the existing Theater and Dance School lobby space, adds two new training rooms, and provides second story space for Mitchell. Art Center.
Lyndall Finley Wortham Theater was built in 1977. It has a trapped floor, a flybill system and a large wing space that joins a large enough storefront to accommodate multiple production sets. Jose Quintero's black box theater was also built in 1977.
School of Theater and Dance costume stores include coloring areas, spray booths, handicraft areas and many machines. The costume shop also comes with a complete wardrobe collection from all time periods.
The School of Theater and Dance scene shop includes plenty of room for metalworking, painting, prop shop, and general construction.
Partnership
The latest collaborations include:
- Co-production of the Great Death and Little Death of Mickey Birnbaum with The Catastrophic Theater, a local theater company created by the founder of Infernal Bridegroom Productions.
- commissioned Houston's most unusual string quartet, the Two Star Symphony, to score and perform in Bertolt Brecht's drama The Good Woman of Setzuan.
- commissioned drama writer Nathaniel Freeman to write the opening opener of the 2008 season "Katrina: The Bridge".
- works with local theater company Mildred's Umbrella to develop new games by playwright John Harvey.
- create new music/dance with AURA, Moores School's contemporary music ensemble.
- the annual debut of a new choreographer's local work at Spring Dance Concert.
The Alley Theater
The Alley Theater-winning Tony Award and School of Theater and Dance form a unique collaboration in 2014, hosting the Alley staff and production during the 2014 season. Alley is undergoing a renovation of its facilities at the time, and the School of Theater opens its doors to an honorable company. This collaboration provides an opportunity for UH Theater post graduate students to observe Alley Theater company members during their residency at UH, and has the ability to apply for apprenticeship.
Houston Shakespeare Festival
Every summer, the Houston Shakespeare Festival produces seasons from two Shakespeare plays in the treasury. Since its founding in 1975, HSF has entertained nearly half a million spectators of theater with free performances at Hermann Park's Miller Outdoor Theater. The Houston Shakespeare Festival has grown into one of the major events on Houston's summer entertainment calendar. HSF is a recognized actor Equity Association theater.
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Art Center
Cynthia Woods Mitchell The Arts Center at the University of Houston promotes collaboration, experimentation and innovation in art. The Center supports the creation and presentation of new works, sponsors visiting artist residencies, and offers courses, scholarships, lectures, and symposiums, all in creative alliances with School of Art, Creative Writing Program, Moores School of Music, Theater and Dance School, and Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston Museum of Art.
Lantrip Elementary School
In 2011, the Lantrip Elementary School Theater Club was established. The Club, a partnership between the School of Theater and Dance and the Houston Independent School District, takes the theater to the Lantrip Elementary every week. The school, located about a mile from the University of Houston campus, is a school of natural science and deaf education. In 2009, the program was recognized by the National Blue Ribbon School Program for academic excellence. The program is managed, maintained, and taught by the theater education majors of the University of Houston. Grade 1-5 students are accepted into the program through the application process. Together with university theater lecturers, they explore the world of creative drama.
Great-Dance Festival
Shared together by Dance Division Chief Karen Stokes, the sixth annual Dance Festival (BRDF) in the summer of 2008 featured new works by choreographers from Houston, Austin, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. BRDF is sponsored by the University of Houston Choreography Center.
BRDF usually lasts the first two weeks of June in Houston's best place to watch an art show, Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex.
