History

Woolrich, Inc., founded in 1830 by John Rich and Daniel McCormick, is the oldest outdoor clothing manufacturer in the United States. The company was founded for the purpose of making fabrics for the wives of hunters, lumberjacks and trappers. Later, the company also provided clothing supplies for the American Civil War. and Antarctica's Richard E. Byrd expedition of 1939-1940.

The 1830 wool factory is located at Little Plum Run in Dunnstable Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. Wool production stopped there around 1843-1845 due to insufficient water supply. The company bought 300 hectares at Chatham's Run near Pine Creek Township in 1834 and built a sawmill. Rich bought McCormick's interest in 1843, and in 1845 the company moved to a new plant at Chatham's Run. The 1845 plant no longer exists in its original configuration but its location remains the premier operating site of Woolrich, which evolved into the city of the company now known as Woolrich, Pennsylvania. The 1830 plant is then used for storage and housing purposes; known as the Rich McCormick Wool Factory, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Another member of Kaya's family, Robert F. Rich, headed Woolrich for many years and also long time as a member of the Republic from the US House of Representatives. Serving 18 years between 1931 and 1951, he was known as a vocal opponent of New Deal and (like many members of his family) an important supporter of Lycoming College.

After camping became popular in the 1970s, Woolrich suffered in the 1980s because other companies wanted to compete. Over the years, their competitors are L.L.Bean, Eddie Bauer, The Timberland Company, The North Face, Patagonia, and Columbia Sportswear. In 1990, Woolrich released half of his 2,600 employees across the country at that time by president S. Wade Judy for less orders. In the same year, the company also closed six factories in Pennsylvania, Nebraska and Colorado for about five years and shifted jobs to Mexico, leaving them with about 1,400 employees. Since then, the number of jobs has continued to change, with about 500 in 2008 and about 200 by 2013. In 1998, Woolrich provided the clothing used in the movie The Horse Whisperer.

In 2007, the president and CEO of the old company, Roswell Brayton, Jr., died after collapsing at Woolrich headquarters. He was a member of the sixth generation of the Kaya family and joined the company in 1977 and became president in 1996 and CEO the following year. The current president, Nick Brayton, and vice president Joshua Rich, represents the seventh and eighth generation of the Kaya family to serve in corporate management. In January 2013, John Ranelli was appointed President and CEO of Central Garden & amp; Pet Company and defend its "Non-Executive" Chairman of the Board title at Woolrich. In May, the company announced that it has plans to move more of its workforce into the United States.

In September 2013, Woolrich partnered with Portland Product Werks (PPW) to produce shoes, a new line for Woolrich. PPW is led by Sean Beers, a former employee of Columbia Sportwear, a competitor to Woolrich. They debuted Woolrich's shoe line at the Salt Lake City Outdoor Salt Market in January 2014, Las Vegas in February and in Autumn 2014 in New York.

In 2014, Woolrich collaborated with Dogfish Head Brewery with the release of a limited edition Tuxedo Pennsylvania, a sprint-fortified pepper ale. In 2015, the company celebrates and reaches its 185th anniversary with an art gallery exhibition at its store in New York.
