Histori

Columbia Sportswear started as a family hat distributor. Present as parents of Gert Boyle chairman, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, escaped from Nazi Germany in 1937 and immediately purchased Portland hat distributors. The company became Columbia Hat Company, named after the Columbia River nearby. In 1948, Gert married Neal Boyle, who became head of the company. Frustration to suppliers affected families to start producing their own products. Columbia Hat Company became Columbia Sportswear Company in 1960.

In 1970, Neal Boyle died after a heart attack. Gert and Boy Boy's son, then a senior at the University of Oregon, took over Columbia's operations, rescuing him from bankruptcy.

The Columbia jacket features a waterproof cloth that can also breathe. In addition, the new jacket features an alternating shell and liner. A variety of usage options and cloth technology fueled rapid sales growth.

Columbia became a public company in 1998. The company acquired Sorel Corporation footwear maker in 2000 and Mountain Hardwear in 2003. In 2006, Columbia acquired the Pacific Trail and the Montrail brand.

In 2001, the company moved its headquarters from Portland to a site in a section unrelated to Washington County, in the Cedar Mill area and beyond the Beaverton city limits. The site at NWÃ, Science Park Drive has a mailing address in Portland, but not in Portland. In 2007, City of Portland officials tried to convince Columbia Sportswear to return to Portland, but the company eventually rejected the idea and said it would expand its existing headquarters.

On June 15, 2008, Columbia Sportswear announced a three-year sponsorship of the cycling team previously known as Team High Road and before that T-Mobile and Team Telekom Sponsors started on July 5, 2008 with the start of Tour de France. His team name is "Tim Columbia". The sponsorship includes both male and female teams.

On August 4, 2010, Columbia Sportswear Company entered into an agreement to acquire OutDry Technologies S.r.l., which has intellectual property and other assets comprising the OutDry brand and related businesses, through cash purchases from Nextec S.r.l., based near Milan, Italy. The transaction is expected to be closed during the third quarter of 2010, subject to customary closing conditions, and is not expected to have a material effect on the results of the company's 2010 operations.

In March 2015, Bryan Timm was appointed president of the company, taking over from Boyle, who remains CEO.

The company logo has been known to resemble the swastika, but the fact that the company was founded by German Jews who escaped from Nazi Germany can be considered enough evidence that the logo was not inspired by the Nazi symbol.
