... his colleagues in the boardroom, in his preaching, ambushed and fired him two years after he surrendered his CEO role to his own chosen successor, Doug Ewert.

On June 19, 2013, Men's Wearhouse's board dismissed Zimmer for unspecified reasons and refused to provide any explanation in his press release. The press release stated that the termination of Zimmer should still be discussed with him.

Although the short press release did not mention the reasons for Zimmer's termination, Zimmer himself briefly explained the matter to CNBC. "Over the past 40 years, I've built MW into a multibillion-dollar company with outstanding employees and loyal customers who appreciate the products and services they have received at MW.For the last few months I have expressed my concern to the Board about the current direction of the company rather than fostering the kind of dialogue in the Meeting Room that has partially contributed to our success, the Council has incorrectly chosen to silence my concerns through termination as executive officer. "

On June 25, 2013, the company, responding to public pressure for more information after its short original statement, released a detailed description of its actions. The statement confirms that Zimmer insists on the full control of public companies. "Neither the Board nor the management wanted a complete breakdown of relationships between Mr. Zimmer and the company. In our discussion with Mr. Zimmer, we made a lot of effort to find a solution that would enable him to continue to have significant involvement with Men's Wearhouse.Unfortunately, Mr. Zimmer does not will accept anything other than full control of the company and the Council has no choice but to terminate it as Chief Executive. Personal life

Zimmer's corporate management style (for example, the abduction of a corporate spiritual guru in June 2004, Deepak Chopra, to his council) is strange in some people's view, while others consider his style to be current.

Zimmer's experience of caring for his mother, who died of cancer, guided him to support his research into the use of MDMA therapy, and for his efforts to legalize marijuana (for example, by donating the equivalent of $ 170,500 to support California's Proposition 19 in 2010).
