ic! berlin brillen GmbH is a German company that designs and manufactures high-end handmade sunglasses in Berlin, and distributes them all over the world. The company was founded in 1996 by Ralph Anderl.

ic! berlin produces stainless steel sheet metal sheets of 0.5mm thick, using a patented hinge design that avoids the use of screws, welding, or glue in their frame construction. The combination of materials and techniques allows their products to be light and flexible.

Corporate foundation

In 1996, Anderl joined Philipp Haffmans and Harald Gottschling to help market their ideas for glasses of glass without glass in Berlin. Unable to sell ideas, the trio established HGA Gesellschaft to manufacture and market glasses under ic brand! brille (pronounced "I See Brille"). Not having an education or business experience allows them to develop ice! brand organically, because all three can approach everything with a completely raw perspective.

The first frame to be produced is 'Jack', weighing 20 grams, with an initial run of 50 pieces. Already familiar with the power of celebrities, Anderl requested support from two leading German actors Peter Lohmeyer and Corinna Harfouch, to promote the new brand by wearing glasses for public appearances and in shooting.

While Haffmans and Gottschling focus on design and production, Anderl will be in control of finance, organization, and distribution. By riding his bike all over Berlin, Anderl will visit potential clients and show samples of the products he keeps in the extra pockets sewn into his coat. This strategy is repeated in ic! First appearance berlin at Optika Fair Fair Cologne in 1997 and the following year at Mido in Milan: unable to secure a stand, Anderl will run around the exhibition center with a trench coat full of ic! Berlin samples, such as those used by counterfeit sellers.

Having created a lot of buzz in Milan, ic! Berlin was given a small present and officially showed for the first time at Silmo Paris, where he won the prestigious Silmo D'Or. This was the first of three victories at Silmo (1998, 2008, 2011). Since then ic! Berlin has become a regular fixture in, and won top honors from the world's top optical, trade and design exhibitions.

In 2003 the trio split up, with Anderl left in the ic! berlin as the sole Managing Director.

Under Anderl, ic! berlin has evolved into fashion, launching jeans and collaborating with designers and other fashion labels such as [Kix], [Bathing Ape], [Luisa Hecking] and [Superfine]. Anderl continues to forge strong relationships with the art world, often collaborating with photographers such as [Mathias Bothor] and [Lyle Owerko].
