Sandals are the type of open shoe, consisting of the only one held by the wearer's feet with a strap over the back of the foot and, occasionally, around the ankle. Sandals can also have heels. While the differences between sandals and other types of footwear can sometimes be blurred (as in the case of huaraches - woven leather footwear seen in Mexico, and peep-toe pumps), a common understanding is that sandals leave all or most of the affected foot. People can choose to wear sandals for several reasons, including comfort in warm weather, economy (sandals tend to require less material than shoes and are usually easier to make), and as a mode option.

Usually, people wear sandals in warm climates or during warmer years to keep the feet cool and dry. The risk of developing athlete's foot is lower than that of closed shoes, and the use of sandals may be part of a treatment regimen for such infections.

History

The oldest known sandals (and the oldest known footwear of any type) are found in Fort Rock Cave in the US state of Oregon; the bark radiocarbon density of the shrub from which they are woven shows an age of at least 10,000 years.

The word sandal comes from Greek. The ancient Greeks distinguished between baxeae (singing, baxea), a sandal made of willow leaves, twigs, or fibers worn by comic actors and philosophers; and cothurnus , boot slippers that rise above the center of the foot, worn mainly by tragic actors, horsemen, hunters, and by rank and authority people. The latter palm is sometimes made thicker than usual by inserting a cork slice, thereby increasing the wearer's stature.

The ancient Egyptians wore sandals made of palm leaves and papyrus. They can sometimes be observed at the feet of Egyptian statues and reliefs, carried by slippers. According to Herodotus, sandals from papyrus are part of the compulsory dress and characteristics of the Egyptian imams.

In ancient Greece, sandals were the most common type of shoes women wear and spend most of their time at home. The Greek slippers feature many ropes that they secure securely to the feet. The top of sandals is usually of colored leather. The palm is made of cowhide, with better quality and consists of several layers. In ancient Rome residents used to carve their boots and sandals with intricate designs.

In Ancient Levant slippers ("Biblical sandals") are made of unprocessed leather and dry grass, and have straps or straps made of cheap simple materials. Although, sometimes gold or silver beads and even gems are added.
