The spencer , dating from the 1790s, was originally an outer wool tail mantle with a tail removed. It is worn as a short, double-breasted jacket, a men's jacket. Originally named for George Spencer, the 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834), who reportedly has tail-coats adapted after his tail was burned by coal from the fire. It was adopted as cluttered clothing by British military officers, leading to a named jacket.

It was also soon adopted as a popular female dress on both sides of the Atlantic during the period of 1790-1820 style The Regency Spencer was worn as a cardigan, or as a short jacket, trimmed to just above the waist, or, in Empire style, to the breast line, and adjusted with lines identical to the dress.

The use of the term spencer continued into the nineteenth century, which means more common type of jacket or any short suit. In Australia and New Zealand this term is sometimes used to refer to thermal underwear.

In today's men's clothing, the term "spencer" is often synonymous with a knitted vest or a vest.
