StÃÆ'¼ssy ( STOO -see ) is a brand of clothing and a private company started in the early 1980s by Shawn Stussy. The company is one of the many who benefit from surfwear trends originating in Orange County, California, but has largely been adopted by streetwear and hip-hop scenes.

History
The company's founder, Shawn Stussy (born 1954), is a California surfboard manufacturer. The logo that had defined the brand began in the early 1980s after he began doodling his last name on his skateboard with wide-angled markers. He started using the logo on his T-shirt, shorts and a hat he was selling out of his car around Laguna Beach, California. The signature came from his uncle, Jan Stussy.
In 1984, Stussy and his friend Frank Sinatra Jr. (nothing to do with singers), partnering to sell clothes. The company expanded to Europe in 1988 and later opened a boutique shop in SoHo, New York. This brand continued to open successful locations throughout the 1990s. It was reported that revenues totaled $ 17 million in 1991 and $ 20 million in 1992. In 1992, the brand was sold throughout the United States in special boutiques and department stores alongside other expensive "California lifestyle" clothing. Outside the country, the brand was found in specialty stores beside the clothing of top international designers.
In 1996, Stussy resigned as president of the company and Sinatra bought its share of the company's ownership. The Sinatra family still owns the brand. According to the company's website, the clothing is available in other corporate and retailer stores in Europe, Asia, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Style
The initial success of this brand has been attributed to its popularity in hip hop and skater/surfer. This brand is also embraced by subcultures of punk and other street subcultures. In a 1992 interview, Stussy said: "Everyone calls it surfing clothes, or urban street clothes, or a surf path... I did not mention it, and I did not mention it on purpose."
