An incontinence pad is a small, high-absorbent, multi-layered sheet used in incontinence and the health care industry as a precautionary measure against urinary incontinence. Usually made of cotton if washed or paper if it can be thrown away. This term can be used to refer to what is also known as "diaperin incontinence" or "diaperin incontinence". Incontinence pads are usually placed in underwear or in a bed or chair under a person. Incontinence pads are produced in light and heavyweight grades that offer a wide range of absorbency, often referred to as 'work capacity', which refers to the true absorbency that incontinence is offered when used. Such pads can come as panty-liners, inserts, pads or even available as substitutes for underwear.
In the UK, seat-or-bed protective pads, known as seat cushions or bed pads, are commonly used in health care settings where incontinence may be a problem. They are usually built in layers of absorbent cloth and laminated absorbent plastic liquid or liquid polyurethane reducer. Products containing polyurethane are generally considered to be better because it provides a waterproof backing, while still allowing the air to circulate reduces the risk of rashes and injuries.
