Jacob (officially known as Boutique Jacob, Inc ) is a chain of women's and women's clothing stores composed of five Canadian stores based in Montreal, Quebec. At its peak, Jacob once had more than 200 stores across Canada, usually at the mall. In addition to its main brand, Jacob, the company operates under Jacob Connexion banners, Jacob Lingerie, Josef and Danz.

The company was founded in 1977 by the current president, Jacob Basmaji. The original store opened in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec and is still in operation. The first store outside of Quebec opened in Toronto in 1985. Jacob opened its first US store (in Cambridge, Massachusetts) around 2000.

Jacob's flagship store is on the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Drummond's street in downtown Montreal.

The stores are closed in 2014 and online sites stop operating by 2015. In April 2015, online sites have restarted offering only their scents and plans to open multiple stores in Quebec alone. Jacob emerged from bankruptcy and will now operate six stores around the world, all located in the province of Quebec. Among these five stores is the original 1977 Sorel store and other stores in Old Quebec. The other three are all located in Montreal (which includes, among other things, the downtown main store and one in the Galeries d'Anjou).

Company history

In 2005, the company launched Josef, looking for an older demographic that, according to market research, is a more active shopper.

Jacob began closing the site in 2008, closing 52 stores with 355 staff in two years. In November 2010, the company owed $ 29 million to suppliers and employees, and $ 8.8 million to the National Bank of Canada. He received court protection from creditors, through the Quebec Superior Court and the Creditor Regulatory Act of the Company, which plans to reformat its operations. While the company attributes its misery to the entry by international retailers to the Canadian market, including H & amp; M and Zara, it also has a negative impact by "surgical spending", the gap in the retail market is increasing during the recession, prompting buyers for high end products or grades, as opposed to mid-market. Canadian gap and Sears are touted as victims.

The Yorkdale Shopping Center general manager forced the company to close its location in a mall, apparently struggling, to allow American retailer J. Crew to open.

On May 6, 2014, the retailer declared bankruptcy; the company will liquidate all 92 of its stores in Canada in the coming weeks. The challenging economy and the rise of new international retailers are cited as part of the reason.

In April 2015, Jacob emerged from bankruptcy and will now operate five stores worldwide, all located in the province of Quebec. Among these five stores is the original 1977 Sorel store and other stores in Old Quebec. The other three are all located in Montreal (which includes the main store downtown).
