The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine , MCSOM , formerly known as Mayo Medical School ( MMS ), is a school research-oriented medicine based in Rochester, Minnesota, with additional campuses in Arizona and Florida. MCSOM is a school within the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Science (MCCMS), the education division of the Mayo Clinic. It provides a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Medical Education Liaison Committee (LCME).

In 2018, US News and World Report ranked as the 6th MCSOM on the list of "Best Medical Schools: Research" (tied with Penn). MCSOM is the most selective medical school in the United States, with the lowest admission rate (2.1%) among schools submitting data for the 2017-2018 application cycle. By 2017, medical students have the highest USMLE Step 1 board score in the country with a median of 245 (tied with Harvard). As a result, MCSOM graduates have high residency placement rates with nearly 70% place in their first choice program during the 2016 Match. Graduates also have the lowest education debt from all medical schools surveyed by USA Today in 2017. Histori

The Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (MFMER, or Mayo Foundation) designates cardiologist Dr. Raymond Pruitt as MCSOM's first dean in 1970 and publicly announced the creation of a medical school the following year. It was officially opened on September 5, 1972, with an inaugural class of 40 students, becoming the 110th medical school in the United States and 2nd in Minnesota.

At the beginning of its establishment, the school was operated in conjunction with the University of Minnesota. MCSOM awarded M.D. first in 1976 under the accreditation authority of the University of Minnesota Medical School. In 1983, the Mayo Foundation moved to terminate their agreement with the University of Minnesota to coordinate educational programs with plans to independently accredit their own degree programs. In 1984, the Mayo Foundation became an independent granting institution accredited by the HLC Association of Colleges and Colleges of the North Central.

A reorganization from the Mayo Foundation in 1989 spewed out a new graduate school graduate called Mayo Graduate School, now named Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (MCGSBS). This facilitates the commencement of M.D.-Ph.D. program, which became the Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) in 2003 when it was first awarded a T32 grant by the National Institutes of Health Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Culture and Tradition

Mayo Clinic School of Medicine has a different culture than most other medical schools. Mayo medical students wear business attire (often referred to as "Mayo wear") rather than a white coat in the clinic to convey professionalism and appreciation to patients. The Zumbro Valley Medical Society (ZVMS), a component medical community of the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA), sponsors and manages many career development activities for Rochester-based MCSOM medical students.

Student Life

MCSOM students qualify for membership at the Mayo Fellows Association, which puts together social events for medical students and graduate students, residents, and associates. Other social outlets available to students include the Mayo Employee Resources Group (MERGs). This MERG sponsorship program and activities for Mayo Clinic affiliates identify with various communities, such as LGBTI, women's leadership, and Native American heritage. The Alice Mayo Society and Mayo Families' Connection offer mobile, career, and social support for other significant MCSOM students.

Art and other creative activities are part of much of the student experience at MCSOM. The Mayo Clinic Dolores Jean Lavins The Center for Humanity in Medicine sponsors year-round programs in the making of artwork, creative writing, theater improvisations, and musical performances. The center publishes Tempest creative art publications every year - a collection of poetry, prose, and art that is meant to illustrate the growth of medical students becoming doctors. It also hosts field trips to local cultural institutions, including the Guthrie Theater, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, and the Rochester Art Center. Curriculum

The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine is a leader and innovator in the development of a medical school curriculum as a founding member of the American Medical Association Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium. The curricular structure in 2018 is described below.

Year 1 and 2

MCSOM students begin their school year in mid-July, with first-year students beginning with a one-week to school orientation, Mayo Clinic, and Mayo Clinic Model of Care. All classes are offered on Pass (P), Pass after Remediation (PR), or Fail rating system (F); no internal student ratings and no participation in Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. This results in a cooperative environment that encourages learning and collaboration. The main courses in the first two years include curricular modalities and problem-based modalities. Major segments of many other curricular courses use problem-based models. The small-group format is the rule, with clinical facilitators (residents, fellows, and faculty consultants) helping to guide students' self-learning.

The unique features of the MCSOM curriculum are selective, which has been proven to improve the academic productivity of medical students and the desire to conduct future research. There are twenty-eight weeks that are not designed between blocks scattered during the first two years. Twelve of these weeks can be used as a vacation or for USMLE Step 1 of special study time. The other sixteen must be spent doing something medically related for at least 20 hours per week - this is called selective. Clinical Experience

Students take part in a longitudinal clinical course in Year 1 (Basic Doctorate) and Year 2 (Advanced Doctoring), with patient meetings starting within the first few weeks of medical school. These courses take place at the Mayo Clinic outpatient and hospital facilities, in addition to the Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center. Students work with Mayo Clinic physicians and renowned researchers in history retrieval, physical examination, and diagnostic skills.

Students meet the terms of community service by viewing uninsured and underinsured patients at the free 2 year Health Education and Advocacy for Community Health (REACH) clinic throughout Year 2. Interested students may volunteer for other free local clinic staff - Smoking Cessation Clinic, Clinic Center at Dodge Center, and Family Resident Clinic Mayo Family in Kasson - for selective credits or just to gain more experience.

Year 3

The 3rd Year curriculum contains seven core clinical outings, three weeks of basic science integration integration and longitudinal research experience. Exercises focused on sensitive physical examination maneuvers and public speaking skills are also provided, in addition to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in preparation for the USMLE CS 2 Step test. Students also complete longitudinal courses in Evidence-Based Medicine during this year, through a series of tasks that require critical literature assessments that correspond to the core clerkships that each student completes.

Year 4

In preparation for Year 4, students and their advisors begin planning a fourth year schedule during Year 3 intersession. Together, they will develop a Year 4 program that reflects students' career goals, individual strengths and educational needs - all informed by curriculum themes School Medicine Mayo Clinic. Health and Endurance Training

In response to increased fatigue physicians across the United States, the MCSOM Student Life and Fitness Committee has implemented longitudinal health programs for all medical students. It begins with mandatory yoga classes during orientation and includes Stress Management and Endurance Training (SMART) taught by Professor of Medicine Dr. Amit Sood. In addition, first and second year medical students are provided with a gym complementary membership at Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center (DAHLC), with an option to continue using this facility at subsidized rates in Year 3 and 4.

Health Care Delivery Certificate

Beginning with classes entering 2015, the school officially integrates a longitudinal course in Health Sciences (SHCD) into a four-year curriculum. The course requires a mix of didactic lectures and practical experience in six major domains of leadership, people-centered care, high-value care, healthcare and technology, population-centered care, and team-based care. The SHCD curriculum adds a social science perspective to the traditional medical school model, which aims to produce doctors who are conscious and able to cope with gaps in the US health care system.

Through the completion of these classes, MCSOM students will be the first in the country to receive a certificate in Shipping Health Sciences upon graduation, together with their medical degree. Medical students have the option of obtaining a master's degree in Health Care Delivery Science through a partnership with Arizona State University, which is usually done online in Year 3 during dedicated research time.

Medical Scientist Training Program (MD- Ph.D.)

Mayo Clinic School of Medicine provides M.D.-Ph.D. a double degree in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, is fully funded through the NIH/NIGMS Medical Scientist Training Program T32 grant.
