Tori Richard is a Honolulu, Hawaii based company that produces men's and women's swimsuits. In its nearly 60-year history, Tori Richard's line has changed from an exclusively female mode (featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, Glamor, Town & Country, Life and other national publications) to resort clothes including sports shirts, Aloha shirts, tropical dresses, swimwear, parting, bags, interior accents, and various fashion and lifestyle accessories. Tori Richard resorts are targeting those who enjoy art, travel and upscale lifestyles. This collection is introduced twice a year in showrooms on the east and west coasts.

Founder Mort Feldman, an avid collector of antiques and Japanese screens, translates his passion for the Eastern-Western fabric mold that remains the signature of Tori Richard. Textile printing as an art form still defines brands, as well as fabrication, construction and attention to detail.

CEO Josh Feldman, son of Mort Feldman, leads a locally owned family business as it approaches the 60th year. In two generations, the company has shifted from designing mainly women's clothing to become an international brand. Through 10 retail stores, websites, and 2,500 wholesale accounts, Tori Richard is sold throughout 50 states, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guam, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Caribbean. The latest Tori Richard stores, especially women's shops, are located at Kahala Hotel & amp; Honolulu; Resort and Mashpee Cape Cod, Massachusetts. More than 80 percent of Tori Richard's sales are driven by the US mainland.

A total of 100 hours may be needed to conceive, design and color the design and make every new design can be printed. Tori Richard collects art concepts throughout the year from artists, studios, art collections, trade shows, retail outlets, and private collections across Europe, Asia and the US. The art team and in-house design at the Honolulu headquarters expanded the concept to create original Tori Richard resort prints. They adhere to specific criteria in design, color and placement, aimed at proportion, visual balance, and originality of the final design. When completed, each TR print is copyright, named, and remains the exclusive property of the company. About 400 new prints are added annually to the TR archive, now totaling at least 25,000 designs.

The vital for each print is the number of color screens required. Printing the design on silk may require up to 22 screens, and for viscose, 17. Patterns are repeated every 24 to 30 inches, while in larger "engineered" molds, one image can take up all 60-inch panels. Various designs ranging from solid-patterned images to extensive artistic, artistic, artistic motifs both in writing and, in Hawaiian men's shirts, embroidered images. Various visual elements - pallets, proportions, moods, messages, soft or hard edges - affect picture selection and final print design.

The motives range from thick geometric prints to botanical images, inspired by nature and lifestyle. Past designs of Richard's Tori outfits include map images, marine sports, Kiplingesque animals and abstract designs, as well as paisleys and tapa sharp motifs in various fabrication. Popular design variations from past collections are sometimes brought back by popular demand. From the beginning, Japanese-style waves, water, storks, fans, chrysanthemums, bamboo, textures and brush strokes - have been prominent in this line.

Tori Richard recently released an inspired vintage series, with distinctive themes, fabrication and more tapered pieces. Emblematic of 56 is cotton, treated for a vintage-washed effect aimed at younger demographics. The Tori Richard line also includes a seasonal theme in high-end fabrics, with embroidery, engineering design in heavy silk.

Tori Richard pioneered pockets and matching parts, now an industry standard. This feature matches the mold so there is no interruption in the design in the pocket or front stitching.

History

Despite being famous for resort clothes and Hawaiian shirts, Tori Richard earns a start in women's suits. Founder Mort Feldman, clothing manufacturer from Chicago, flew to the Territory of Hawaii in 1953 at Pan American Chinese Clipper, intending to retire. He founded the company in 1956. Together with partner Janice Moody, former sportswear designer for Catalina, and Mitsue Aka, Moody pattern maker, he formed Tori Richard with one sewing machine and practically no capital. They named the company after Victoria (Tori, Moody's daughter) and Richard, Feldman's eldest son.

Their first office, at Pier 7 in Honolulu, is known to have floor boards that get wet from a tidal wave at Honolulu Harbor. Among its early offices was a historic Quonset and Brewery Primo cabin, damaged by a fire in 1973 and rebuilt to remain the company's headquarters for 17 years.

Soon after its launch in 1956, Tori Richard became nationally known for his unkempt silhouette, vibrant colors and dramatic prints of dresses, culottes, beachwear, kaftans and casual wear from a high fashion resort women's line, made mostly of fabric Europe imported in time. Offices in mainland markets - New York, California, Florida, Dallas and Chicago - attracted the attention of top-class retailers, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & amp; Taylor, Bergdorf Goodman, Gimbel, I. Magnin, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Best & amp; Co and Marshall Field.

In the 1960s and 70s, the Fifth Avenue windows and top national fashion magazines featured Tori Richard in features and advertisements, many of which were photographed on site in Hawaii. Because recreational life is a zeitgeist era, the Tori Richard fashion - tunics, harem pants, home set, shift, kaftan, kulot, swimsuit sheath, and Capri pants - served cocktail parties, beaches and popular terraces at the time. The aesthetics - streamlined and dramatic - depart from the tropical "wearing aloha" that Hawaii is known for. Customers range from Lucille Ball to King of Morocco to department store customers across the country.

In 1966, Mort Feldman and a Hawaii fashion executive, Howard Hope, lobbied the Hawaii State Legislature to establish "Aloha Friday" as a recognized country practice island. The business was successful, and statewide businesses dressed in aloha clothes on Friday, and, increasingly, on other days of the week.

The company grew during the boom years of Hawaii tourism. From the early 1960s, shortly after the state in 1959 and the introduction of jet travel to Hawaii, fashion emerged as the country's third largest export, with Tori Richard being one of the largest fashion exporters. At the request of a Hawaiian retailer named Liberty House, Tori Richard, using a mold from his female line, introduced a men's shirt in 1969. In the mid-1970s, the male business segment was significant, and today's shirts and resort clothing, partly collected diligently , taken to 50 states.

Cotton grass, now a staple of the company with its exclusive touch, debuted in the 1970s and became a male line-up.

In the 1980s, men's clothing covered women's clothing in the Tori Richard line. In 1983, Mort Feldman retired to New Zealand, to return to the US three years later. His son, Josh, graduated from Punahou School and the University of California at San Diego, with degrees in arts and degrees in political science, dropped his ambitions for law school and joined Tori Richard in 1994. Under Feldman's younger leadership, the company grew more than 600 percent.

Upon his return in 1994, Josh Feldman manages the printing and product divisions of the company. He again introduced engineering printing to the product line in 1995 and redoubled efforts to identify Tori Richard as a print house.

In 2002, the women's line was relaunched, and a year later, the first Tori Richard retail store opened at Hyatt Regency Waik? K? Today there is a Tori Richard store in Ala Moana Center, The Shops in Wailea, Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Hilton Hawaiian Village and Whaler's Village in Ka'anapali. Year 2006 saw the 50th anniversary of the company and also the year Tori Richard received the "Resort Resort Rescue Award of the Year" from Hawaiian Retailers. In 2012, readers of Honolulu Star-Advertiser chose Tori Richard's "Best of the Best" in the aloha shirt category.

The company recently received a film credits for creating George Clooney's T-shirts in "The Descendants," the 2012 Academy Award winner for "Best Adapted Screenplay." Working with costume designer Wendy Chuck, CEO Josh Feldman and his team provide T-shirts George Clooney for many movie scenes.

Tori Richard also provides T-shirts for Alex O'Loughlin (Steve McGarrett) and Daniel Dae Kim (Chin Ho Kelly) in "Hawaii Five-0," as Jack McGannett Jack did in the original television series from 1968 to 1980.

Musicians, such as Sammy Hagar and, Jimmy Buffett, wore Tori Richard's shirts in their performances, and several artists wore them on the covers of their albums.

Tori Richard designed the signature shirt for over 2,000 volunteers and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) staff, pioneered by President Barack Obama in Honolulu in November 2011. Tori Richard also designed and created an exclusive Aloha shirt for Obama and 21 world leaders attended, an effort that requires original design, special limited printing, custom labeling and hand sewing in Hawaii. The shirt was given to the delegation but was never used at an official meeting.

In 2008, the company installed a $ 1.1-million, 154-kilowatt system at its headquarters and warehouse in Honolulu, becoming one of the world's first solar manufacturers and retailers. The system meets 94 percent of the company's electrical needs at its Honolulu headquarters. In 2011, the company installed an additional 105 KWH system on adjacent properties, effectively offsetting its 100% carbon footprint.
