Histori

CSD was held to commemorate the Stonewall Riot, LGBT's first major uprising against a police attack that took place at Stonewall Inn, a bar in Manhattan, Christopher Street in New York City in the Greenwich Village district on June 28, 1969..

On June 28, 1970, Christopher Street Liberation Day in New York and the Christopher Street West Association in Los Angeles marked the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the first Gay Pride Parade in US history. To accommodate the interests of the various participating groups, the Christopher Day Exodus Day Committee called the days leading up to the Gay Pride Week.

Both New York City and Los Angeles have since continued to remember and celebrate Christopher Street Liberation Day/Christopher Street West on the last Saturday of June. It has become an international tradition to hold demonstrations for the rights of LGBT people in the summer. Germany's first Christopher Street Day took place in Berlin in 1979; another parade before it had a different name. The first documented LGBT parade in Germany was at MÃÆ'¼nster on 29 April 1972. The first parade in Switzerland was celebrated on June 24, 1978 in ZÃÆ'¼rich and called "Christopher Street Liberation Memorial Day."

Current situation

CSD Berlin has started in 1979. Now almost every major city in Germany celebrates CSD, with the largest in Berlin (Berlin Pride), Hamburg (Hamburg Pride) and Cologne (Cologne Pride). When Cologne hosted Europride in 2002, it attracted 1.2 million participants and spectators to the city along with the Cologne Carnival.

Due to organizational reasons, CSD does not occur on the June 27 historic date, but on a different weekend between June and August. On the one hand, CSD is considered a political parade, and therefore also includes speeches, political motto, and the presence and patronage of famous politicians. On the other hand, CSDs are often compared to a carnival procession or techno parade, where celebrating and partying are the main focus. This is the idea of all gay pride parades: through celebrations, LGBT communities show that they can be proud of themselves and their communities.

The typical Christopher Street Day parade includes buoys as well as walking groups that are usually provided by and composed of members of LGBT organizations, but increasingly used as a platform for political campaigns and commercial advertising as buoys by commercially sponsored political parties and trucks becomes more common. It's also typical to see many drag queens or women and men (mostly the latter) in minimal clothing. BDSM enthusiasts also frequently participate in CSD. Parades are usually quite fun and have a slightly cheerful and interesting energy for it. In addition to the Parade and the last demonstration, in many cities there are days or until the whole week of street festivals and cultural events with artists, political events, lectures, readings, parties and other celebrations.

In Berlin

Europe's largest gay gay party is held annually since 1993 in Berlin and is called Lesbian and Gay City Festival ( Lesbisch-schwules Stadtfest Berlin ). Today Berlin is a leading city in Europe, when it comes to gay events with four major gay festivals held annually: Lesbian and Gay City Festival, Berlin Pride, Folsom Europe and Easter in Berlin. Even the smaller Pride Parade called Kreuzberg Pride, held every year with Dyke March.

The growth and commercialization of CSDs, coupled with their de-politicization - has led to alternative CSDs in Berlin, called the Kreuzberg Pride (CSD) or political party members not invited to speeches, or party or corporate sponsorship floats. After the parade there is a festival with a stage for speakers and political entertainers. The group discusses lesbian/transsexual/transgender/gay or weird perspectives on issues such as poverty and unemployment benefits (Hartz IV), gentrification, or "Fortress Europe. "

In June 2010 American philosopher and theorist Judith Butler rejected the Civil Courage Award (Zivilcouragepreis) of the Christopher Street Parade in Berlin, Germany at the awards ceremony, debated and mourned in a speech that the parade had become too commercial, and ignored the issue of racism and double discrimination facing homosexual or transsexual migrants. According to Butler, even organizers themselves promote racism. The general manager of the CSD committee, Robert Kastl, countered Butler's allegations and pointed out that the committee had provided a lesbian counseling center dealing with double discrimination in 2006. Regarding the allegations of commercialism Kastl further explained that CSD organizers do not require a small group to pay for participation fees that start at 50 EUR and up to 1500 EUR. He also abstains from all forms of racism and Islamophobia.
