A rash guard , also known as rash vest or rashie , is an athletic shirt made of spandex and nylon or polyester. The name of the rash guard reflects the fact that the shirt protects the wearer against a rash caused by abrasion, or because of sunburn due to long exposure to sunlight. This shirt can be worn alone, or under a wet suit. Rash guards are naturally used for light coverage in warm and extreme summer temperatures for some water sports including surfing, polo canoeing, water resistance training, scuba diving, snorkeling, freediving, wakeboarding, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, stand surfing paddles, or swimming. There is also a lower body rash guard, which is similar to compression shorts to wear under surfhorts boards, but more specifically for surfers.

Rash guards are most often worn while surfing when the weather is too warm for wetsuits, and to prevent wax-based peeling from gliding above and beyond the surfboard, either on the torso, or the legs. Surfboard wax holds sand from the beach that can rub against the surfer's body while rowing to rest, or feet while sitting on someone's board. Rash guards also offer protection from the sun (measured with Ultraviolet Protection Factor) and little protection against jelly fish stings and sometimes worn under wetsuits to prevent blisters. Rash guards help prevent irritation caused by the rapid effects with surface water and waves as well.

Rash guards allegedly originated in Australia, where they are often referred to as "rashies" or "rashys." Variations of rash guards have made their way into other sports including baseball, American football, water polo, Grappling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts. Athletes who wear rash guards at MMA/Grappling/BJJ seek protection against injuries, burns, and the spread of disease. Rash guards are also gaining popularity among the Historical European Martial Arts community, for protection against injuries during minor debates or to regulate moisture/temperature under the generally warm type of protection of the Acetone or Gambeson body.

Other important components of rash guards include flat stitching, and six-panel construction. Flatlock seams create stitches where the stitching allowance is flat to the garment instead of hanging off from it. This is made by adjusting the overlock or threaded thread stitching. Flatlock seams increase the strength of the garment for intense exercise or recreational activities. Six construction panels, different materials for separate body parts sewn together in panels, compared to conventional 4-t shirt construction allow the user to increase wet or dry mobility.

The combination of products used to build rash guards is slightly different depending on the designer. The use of nylon and spandex creates light, fast dry, flexible, durable, antibacterial and natural water clothing.

Swimsuit

Swimsuits are relatively new in the consumer market, but are increasingly popular. They are generally more loose fitting and casual wear. Their main goal is to offer an alternative to sunscreen to protect the wearer's skin from solar UV radiation and the possibility of skin cancer. Many swimsuits carry an UPF 50 rating, which blocks more than 98% of harmful sunlight. Many people find that sunscreen is not always enough because it is often not used properly and some have allergies or chemical sensitivities in sunscreen. Children's skin can be very sensitive to sun and sunscreen. Many children, and parents, find it much easier to wear a swimsuit for being loose and slipping easily. In addition, it is comfortable and yet provides sun protection. Although the name generally applies to water sports, people use swimsuits for various activities: swimming, boating, golfing, tennis, gardening, splashing, water parks, beach tours, playing pool, rivers and lakes, water skiing, surfing, snow skiing, sled ride, skimboarding, mixed martial arts and Brazilian jujutsu, and even ordinary everyday clothes.
